Don't have the car yet, but with some friends that I hang out with constantly, we went to the dealer that had an existing demo 135i that we could try out, set the seats up front to how we are comfortable sitting, and climbed in and out of the back with my wife and his fiancee respectively. In essence, we played musical BMW chairs.
We concluded that maybe short trips from their house to dinner or movie would be fine but for long term distances would yet to be determined. Still I don't foresee a problem (I am 5'7, friend is 5'9, my wife and his gf are equally 5' each. The 135i is as spacious in back as an E36 3-series coupe from the 90's, which I have extensive experience in and went on long road trips with 3-4 people w/o issues. So depending how how big/tall/small your passengers are, YMMV.
imho, if its important for someone to have 3-4 people in your car constantly, why not just buy a 335i sedan and you get the best of both worlds?
