Are these known for causing 'Increased Battery Discharge' errors?

I bought my 2012 135i used and the car had some work done by your shop according to the previous owner. He did not mention a battery swap, but I took my car in for service today because the 'increased battery discharge' warning along with stuff like comfort access not working was really, really annoying. Turns out I have an "aftermarket racing battery" in the car which isn't "strong enough" for the car. So now I'm paying $550.44 to get a proper battery purchased and installed and "coded". I've asked them to leave the aftermarket battery with the car so I can try and determine exactly what the problem is/was. I'm embarking on a 2300+ mile car trip in 2 weeks and the last thing I needed was a battery issue which is why I'm having them replace it now.

Any suggestions on what might have happened would be great. I'll post more information on the battery once I have it in hand.
