I'm sure I've currently got less experience than everyone else who's commented so far given that I've had my car for just 4 days but today I found it quite acceptable to potter around town in D mode (dropping kids at school) and then use the paddles to click down a cog (or two... or three) when negotiating a turn or requiring a bit of extra urgency. This seems like a great combination for morning traffic.
