You could get Torque and an ELM327 and see the 'percentage of fuel remaining' (resolved to 0.1 percent) on your phone at anytime while in Bluetooth range...
My app divides GPS miles travelled by Gallons Used. My numbers are somewhat skewed from what the OBC says. Sometimes better, sometimes worse. But generally better than you are getting.
I don't pay much attention to MPG anymore - it's just another indication of overall vehicle health, something good to have when you can't read oil pressure or temp.
