It just gets off so much, so fast, that there's not a lot left for the towels. It won't cut your time in half or less, but it is definitely quicker.
I squeegee the car (aka water blade), then hit it with a single large towel, then with a smaller one to finish it off. Then get into the door jambs and such.
I've never had an issue with the squeegee, but I do take care to keep it clean. And FWIW I'm pretty anal retentive about these things (i.e. I have never once taken the car through an automatic wash).
