Out of the last 4 new BMWs I've bought (since 1996), I followed BMW's break-in instructions to a T with 3 of them. The 4th, I only made it 200 miles before giving up, and not caring about the recommendations. That car went through a quart of oil every 3k-4k miles. The others never needed any oil, other than with oil changes.
That's my personal, non-scientific, 1st hand experience.
