I had the same dilemma and decided on the i version instead of the ix. 330 i is on order.
Several reasons:
1. The XI adds a considerable amount of weight.
2. 330i with the snow tires will be fine. I used to have a Miata and with snows, got through all road conditions with some good controlled slides every now and then :-)
3. Extra money to buy a set of blizzaks and wheels
4. Lastly, dealer could not confirm whether ix will be raised an inch or so similar to the 2005 model. To me, the added hieght of the car seemed odd.
I live in a hilly part of NJ, and with my current rear wheel drive car (in all season tires), only had to wait once last year to drive up the hiill to my driveway. (park at bottom of neighborhood until the plows went through) With snows, I think it will work fine.
