In defense of the 2003 E320... with new all season tires, I was able to handle the winters in NJ pretty well... this included daily commutes from berkeley hts - newark via rt 78, and occasionally taking the longer scenic route past the short hills mall, the livingston mall, etc...
On tires that had about 10k miles worth of wear on them... then it was a different story....
My neighbor who lives across the street had the prev. gen GS300 and he'd get regularly stuck in the snow etc coming up to our street... he just bought a new GS300 AWD so who knows how it'll handle...
It boils down essentially to the tires... if you have good relatively new all season tires or some quality winter tires, you'll have no problem... if you don't but you have AWD, you'll be slipping and sliding regardless...
