It took a few months before many people saw more than ~$500 off MSRP on the 1's (threads claiming bigger discounts were a big deal for a few months) while discounts on the 3's were much larger. The 1's also received less attractive financing and lease rates for quite a while. The 1's are definitely less expensive now but these two factors resulted in a "new model" premium for those who picked up one of the early 1's.
There should still be several threads floating around where people complained about e82 135i leases costing more month-to-month than e92 335i leases over the same period and with the same amount at signing. IMO, this is part of the reason there was a smaller percentage of leased 1's for a while - the lease terms were horrible.
