Could also be described as a hesitation. The engine is running smoothly, then out of nowhere something interrupts the normal firing order of the cylinders and you get a moment of strangeness. If the car is under load when it misfires, you'll get a kind of hiccup or stutter where the power will go away for a moment. If it's at idle, it'll just kind of :
utter:: for a second then regain its composure.
