I just got a 2011 135i with DCT. I used to have a Z4 with SMG. With the SMG, the clutch never engaged until I hit the gas. With the DCT, as soon as I let go of the break, the car starts moving, both in 1st and reverse. Is this expected behavior? So if I gradually release the break and nudge forward, my clutch is slipping? Isn't this a bit of useless wear?

Yes, this is normal behavior. The car has a creep feature built in which the M3 does not have. In these settings the car is slipping the clutch, though I'd hardly call it unnecessary wear since the clutch will slip either way, either automatically or with your own foot.
At first I didn't like this, but it has proved very useful, particularly when my less car savvy boyfriend goes to drive.
