You are talking about the read tail lights? Those three LED tubes inside of the tail light - they go bad all the time. There is a service campaign (not a recall) on the tail lights. They need to be replaced. IF the car is still under warranty... BMW will pay to have them replaced. Both sides should be replaced. IF you car is out of warranty... you should see what BMW will offer you as "good will" policy.
IF your friends car is out of warranty... those tail lights aren't that expensive. You can even update to the new 2012 style "tubes" for $160 each tail light.
