I am a fan of the Golf R. May pick one up when it becomes available in Australia. Not sure about it being a poor man's S3 though as it cost more than the S3 in the UK and actually has more power than the S3 (yeah I know it's just the difference in tune). The AWD hardware is also more advanced than the S3. S3 uses the same Haldex AWD as the R32, but the new R has an additional electric pump which ensures AWD is constant and doesn't require slip before transfering torque to the rear. Should translate to much better driver's car but we will see.
