As a comparison of tires sizes for different chassis, we see the following:

E30 M3's are running 235. Most everyone runs 245 or 255 square on the E36 and on the E46 non-m. 265 or 275 square on the E46 M3, 255 square on the E9X non-m, and 275 square on the E9X.

17x8.5" et40 with 225/40/17 will fit now on a stock car. the tire's narrow and clears the fender front and rear.
I won't argue any of that because it's certainly true. I was mainly speaking from a 128i perspective where stock sizes are 205/225. For daily driving and the occasional autox, 225 square is plenty of tire to have fun with. I currently run 17x8 ET38 with 225s and it's almost too low of an offset up front (for my tastes). I have a set of your 17x8.5 ET40 ARC-8s for my E36 M3 that I need to try on my 128i.

My basis for the 17x8 ET40-45 was because of the 18" square sizing for the 1 series which is 18x8.5 ET45.

Either way, I'm a huge fan of Apex and will continue to be. I appreciate your support of the community and that's why I have 2 sets of your wheels for my race car.
