You want to disconnect the battery not just so you don't throw an air bag code but so that you do not DEPLOY the airbag(s) by accident!

When ever working on air bags - its always a good idea to disconnect the battery AND THEN wait 30 minutes before working on the car. Most SRS(air bag) systems can still deploy the bags even with the battery disconnected for teh first few minutes. That is why you want to wait a bit.
