My brother in law looked at the 135i but ended up with a 335i coupe with M-sport. He came from a history of three 328i sedans in a row though. I think the small size and firm ride were too much of a shock for him.

In the end, it all comes down to preference. I prefer small, tight cars, so I don't really want to upgrade to a 3-series, but I can see why someone would. The cars are nicer inside, and there are small improvements that I enjoy, depending on the circumstance. For example, the 3-series cruise control will actually apply brakes on a down-hill run to keep the car at the set speed. The cruise in the 1-series doesn't do that (at least not my 2010). Little things, but still things. For some people, those little things are a bigger priority than a stiff suspension and short-wheelbase agility.
