You had the benefit right but the concept of how it works exactly backwards. The coatings are designed to insulate (be as bad thermal conductors as possible), keeping the heat in the pipe until it's out of the engine bay (or, in some extreme cases, people will coat all the way back... but lots of decreasing marginal benefit there.

That lowers engine bay temps, which is good for power and component longevity. It also increasing scavenging, which theoretically creates power.

There's also a side perk of coating the pipes, protecting them from salt/etc.

None of the effects are particularly huge on their own, but there's no downside (rare for mods) and it's not overly expensive.
