You have to pierce the knob through the retaining clip with the extra material of the boot between the holes. Otherwise the knob will just spin and feel sloppy .. The knob should not spin regardless of the boot. There is a retaining/positioning slot on the top of the shift stick and a piece inside the shift knob which it slots into to prevent spin.
