That is correct. (I have tried: I once drove around for 15 minutes without the key as a test, and it never shut off)
If the car is running, and they keys are taken out - you get a warning on the dash of a key with a line through it. The car continues running indefinatly. If you stop/stall - you have 5-10 seconds to turn the car back on (without the key) as with all E90's. If you stop the car, open the drivers door and close the drivers door - your "courtesy" restart is cancelled.
It would be a bit stupid to drive around without the key though.
