You need to get yourself a (good)code reader to know for sure. Some codes will throw an engine check light (or CEL = check engine light) and some do not(Shadow codes).
You can look on ebay for CAN/BUS code readers.
Bav-Tech makes the BT scan tool. It works well.

No, it is the memory that the engine ECU(or DME) that stores engine fault codes when something goes wrong with the engine.
