Just to add my .02, my water pump failed 4/15/2012 with 56k on the clock. Was covered under my CPO warranty. Pretty much same situation, was driving the car on the highway, cars first out of town highway trip, about 140 miles round trip, red temp light came on, fan went haywire.
My service advisor said would of been a $1200+ repair, thank goodness for BMW roadside and warranty!
