I thought the same thing too... until I started using German Castrol oil instead of Mobil-1. Both were the same grade oil: 0w40 and LL-1 approved.
The oil brand really
does matter(!) - other wise I don't think BMW would stamp it right on our oil caps.
I use German Castrol in my car. I have noticed that the oil temp needle rns about two needle widths colder with G.C vs M1. Plus my engine runs much quieter and starts up with less metallic noise when cold.
