Actually it is RFID... Anything that uses radio signals to send a indentification string to a receiver is considered RFID. In this case the RFID tag in the key is active (since it has a battery). Look on the back of the key and there is a frequency and FCC number for it (at least there is of mine which I have CA, but the older key from my E46 also had this information).

Also many tags work only at the distance of inches and some even require physical contact with the reader...
