I just store the 1er for three months, put the Blizzak WS-70s on the beater Focus, and drive on.
A cheap winter car with good snows on all four corners can't be that expensive, compared to the beating that your 1er takes during a nasty winter, over the life of the car.
South of the Mason-Dixon line, I'd put snows on a 1er, and go for it, unless you are up in the mountain boonies.
North of the line (like me), all bets are off.
But, I am spoiled. My local garage mechanic stores it for free : )
