You are semi correct. It won't rip off but at high speeds such as 100+ the downforce will bend the front of it so its not a straight lip anymore but makes it sag towards the bottom. That's why alot of these lips contour to the middle front of the bumper where they add the strong 3M tape to make sure it won't sag like that.

You can't make a contour to the middle of the front bumper with ABS and ABS by itself isn't going to be strong enough to withstand the downforce at 100+ mph unless you get those metallic rods and attach the front of the lip to the front bumper like the track cars do it.

That's why there aren't many DIY front lips and that's why most of the front lips are alot more complicated than just 1 sheet of ABS plastic.
