Got my car back
The dealer returned my car yesterday afternoon and picked up the loaner. To my surprise, replacing the differential does seem to have eliminated the high-pitched whistle/whine.
I reiterated to the SA that the 2012 loaner makes exactly the same noise, which made it hard to imagine that the differential was the problem and also makes me wonder how long the "fix" will last. His reply was: "They all do it. If the noise comes back, just let me know and we'll replace it again. It's covered under warranty."
