I would say they have nothing to do with the cars we drive today, but I would say a lot of future dev happens in the top series. Clearly F1 is truly unique but some dev work in F1 could be priceless in the future. KERS is inevitable on daily drivers in the future.
The reason we don't see any E30 M3's anymore is because the companies (BMW especially) have gotten to big and their customer base has changed. They produce cars for the masses now, not the enthusiast. You factor in this shift in focus with the evolution of technology, inflation and we get further away from the originals. This happens in everything (that I can think of), it's a natural evolution, I for one am a fan of the influx of technology. However, having a bare bones option would also be nice.
