The key is in the tuning and fueling. Provided those are both up to par, this motor will reliably make 600 or so to the wheels with no major issues (outside of the peripheral parts that always fail on 54s). Push much past that and your margin gets thinner, but even so we were blessed with a very stout OE platform. The WR currently stands at mid 700s on a 100% stock motor.
You just don't see N54s dropping rods, warping cranks, valvetrain issues, etc. Most that go kaboom are the result of overly aggressive tuning, not power levels per se.
Then you add in the fact that these singles are far more efficient, you can produce equivalent power with far less timing and the ensuing heat.
The N54 is very temperamental and fuel still needs some work. But it's a ridiculously efficient and strong motor.
