Yes, 'reihen' means straight.

reihen-sechszylinder-benzinmotor = inline six cylinder gasoline motor.

Actually Ian I don't think BMW builds these models themselves. I remember seeing something on German TV about engine models like these. Or even some of the car show cutaway cars - that almost every German car makes has at a world class event like IAA or Paris. Most factories have an outside company do it for them. Ofcourse they are swon to secrecy!

Its kind of like when you tour BMW factory... all the sub components are made by outside firms. Like the wleding robots or the moving floors or even some of the sub contractors setup shop INSIDE of BMW factories. I remember the tour guide saying that was the case in leipzig with the seat supplier. When you do tour a German car factory... they even are proud of the supplier... so their company name, address and phone contacts are hund up there on their machinery/components. It is all very German I think. These signs.
