I had a 320d loaner and loved the feature. Car would start before I'd get my foot across to the accelerator so it made near enough to no difference in driving style. You could disable it but I liked it and the car would also start if it needed to crank up the air con.
Tho in regards to the OP, the dealer really should have taken 30s to explain it.
