I used the Mobil 1 because it was on the shelf at Wal-Mart and I had a gift card to burn through. LL-01 oils can be a little tricky to find on the shelf at times.

I was talking about GASOLINE engines not Diesels.
LL-1 = USA/Canada high sulfur fuels
LL-4 = Germany/Europe low sulfur fuels

Personally I prefer the German Castrol (G.C) over the Mobil-1 oil. I have noticed(as others here have too!) lower oil temps and a quieter engine, esp on cold starts it has less of a metalic clicking.
This is what I use:
Castrol RS Edge LL-4 0w40 (bc I live in Germany with low sulfur fuels!) I think there IS a reason why BMW says to use Castrol oils.
