Would be a good one to look up and find out exactly what that heavy mass/chunk of iron is for...it's got to be the heaviest single piece of weight hanging (seemingly uselessly) to the car, that you'd want to remove for an instant large weight reduction to the vehicle.

I've also noticed that these weights are on the same side of a given type of vehicle whether right or left hand drive, surely this will affect weight distribution/handling to some extent...
Probably due to mass production.
