Yes they have to be coded by BMW diagnosis equipment due to manufacturing differences in the injectors. If you swap it and drive it with the old coding, it will be too rich or too lean. I have seen cars not run at all either. It failed and you've already had the recall? Are you positive that's what it is? There is also a 2 year part warranty on all parts (except maint items) that covers labor as well. Might be worth getting it checked out prior to buying the injector...
