I will take a look next time I get in the car, but I definitely can't see the cable from the driver's seat (it should be routed on the bottom left) or from standing at the driver's side door. That would drive me nuts.
Although I followed the directions here:
http://www.p3cars.com/guides/135%20V...20Assembly.pdf, I seem to recall playing with the cable a bit to make sure it laid flat and did not stick up behind the gauge.
You could always wrap the few inches of the grey cable in black electrical tape (or the other black "cling" cable wrap that BMW uses on electrical cables).
