It's definitely NOT a Texas thing. Deposits policy is solely the discrection of the dealerships. I've never had to actually give any dealer my money, ever. Once, for a Lexus dealership, I wrote them a check for $1000, but only as a gesture of my commitment. They never actually cashed it. I always tell the dealership up front I'm obsessive about my money and I don't like parting with it!
