Comparing the N52 and N54 is like chalk and cheese, completely different motors, both do what they're designed to do very well.
I think the 128i motor is great, plenty of power. I think the only thing that holds it back is the auto transmission. If you've got a manual N52 it's a great combination.
It's not like we're comparing the 135i to a 118i! I do think a tuned 135i is on a whole new level to most things in its price range though.
