one of my friend also heard it when he was sitting on the passenger side and he thought it was a rock or debris hitting the car, he heard it happen again a mile later. So I drove with the music off and try to listen for the same noise and heard it one time. It is as you describe, will try to check the undercarriage and the diff fluid later.
