OK, I was wrong, it does stay in auto mode when you turn off the AC button. Although I could swear it didn't use to do that.
In any case, it probably depends on where you live. Here in AZ, humidity is rarely a problem, especially in the winter. So it's still a waste to run the compressor when it's cool.
Thanks for straightening me out everybody, I will use this more often now.
