In my opinion it's only marginally effective because several permanent speed cameras use road strips (just like the ones installed on the A8 Stuttgart). I have also observed a series of sensors spaced out over 2 meters that work in the same manner only measuring by IR I assume. It is usually placed on the road from Panzer to Holzgerlingen.
The 9500i will work like a charm against the ubiquitous Skoda Roomster with camera in the back and you can manually mark locations as you pass them.
The most effective success I have had is simply learning to listen to the radio reports.
