Regrettably I had the shocks installed professionally (hoping to avoid any clunking) so I don't know what they did pre-install. It seems to only come from the driver side. When in the cabin and driving it almost sounds like the wheel is loose and flopping around, but I know its on there tight. I am going to check the tightness of the nut on top of the shock tonight. I did buy them brand new and am happy to have a good warranty. I also will check to make sure the spring is seated properly in the top mount.
