You only have to remove the ground cable. By breaking the battery's connection all electronics won't have power. Its also a good idea to turn off all electrical items before removing the ground cable. And when you reinstall the ground cable... don't be scared of a few sparks that's normal. IF you make it spark too much, you can damage some of the electrical items in a car.
