heck with CD's - go vinyl

Not having a problem with my CD player, but I use my iPod more. Definitely rip at higher than 128, or use a lossless format. There's a thread around here somewhere on the impact of sample rates and lossless formats. Get a 160GB iPod classic and store your entire collection on it. Beats carrying around a truckload of CD's.

Another advantage to using an MP3 player: CD's can get damaged pretty quickly sitting in your car, especially in hot or cold climates.

But you say your an audiophile - get a USB turntable and play your vinyls.
