Last year I witnessed a 135i with a Cobb tune going into 'limp mode' after some spirited driving with 2 1Ms in the curvy/hilly Black Forrest. The owner changed the Cobb tune setting to a less aggressive mode and that seemed to resolve the matter: after an engine cool down of half an hour or so all systems were OK again (no limp mode anymore).

In some way, 'limp mode' serves the same purpose as fainting: a way to keep the body safe from (further) harm.
