It could mean they're failing as they do seem to get louder when things are on their way out, but they also are very noisy without the engine cover installed. The engine cover does a good job of deadening some of that ticking. When I had to trim my cover to install some oil catch cans along with installing the BMS cowl filters, the ticking became noticeably louder.
