Overheating N54..Water Pump Failure?

So i was driving normal yesterday and on the way home last night gave it a decent amount of gas and when i slowed down the car when into Max Cool which i thought was strange as the fan had never been that loud since ive owned the car but wasent sure what to make of it. started it up today went a short distance and again max cool came on and on the way home
i got the Yellow Engine Temp light followed by a Red one a few seconds later along with a top speed of 5mph as i rolled off a main road.. Coolant boiled out of the cap as soon as i opened it loosing most of it on the road let it cool off added some water and drove the last mile to my house and just had it towed to BMW. Seems to be a water pump failure from what i looked up being an issue around my amount of miles.... Has anyone else had this overheating issue being related to the water pump??
