How to create Pops and Bangs

Hey guys, bare with me now; I am a car newb and I saw a couple of videos of 1 series and new f30 with really nice sounding pops and bangs when you release the throttle. I am curious what actually causes it to create those kinds of sounds. I hear people saying that getting the 135I axleback exhaust would make it somewhat. I recently got the 135I "muffler back" installed because the axleback has weird bends and my mechanic did not want to wield on those positions and I am not really hearing too much of those crackles and etc. Just curious what actually causes it to make those sounds.

Thanks!!

resonator delete+ primary cat delete= gunshot exhaust. I'm having my resonator welded back on tomorrow. There's some pops in this video to give you an idea

I'd assume removing any sort of "restriction" such as a muffler or resonator/cats would allow more free flow and create overrun crackles and pops (?)

On my 135, it was the factory PPK tuning that gave me the "pops and bangs". It is a listed feature of having it done.

@Illestfoigs get a Performance Exhaust before BMW stops making them.

You will thank me later.

Headers give an excellent overrun sound when you lift.

Not really relevant(OP has a 128i).

I have a 128i with a BMWPE. What kind of sound difference would supersprint headers make? I am not too interested in being any louder.

For the OP, the BMWPE is a well balanced exhaust. You get some nice crackles when driving the car hard and it's pretty quiet when you're easy on the throttle. The magnaflow will probably induce too much drone and deleting cats and resonators will make it insufferably loud for a daily imo.

Dayum that is way too raspy for me, but i like the cracks, by any chance do you hear it inside the cabin?

HAHA i would, if the price wasn't so high I can't afford that kind of expensive exhaust, plus I like the black chrome tips from 135I exhaust haha!

Yea PE does sound nice, but for the price, I wouldn't really consider it tbh. The Magnaflow just sounds really cheap from what I hear and my mechanic said not to go with that direction. I didn't even ask why LOL. I think resonator wouldn't make too much of a difference, I hope :P

Not really relevant(OP has a 128i).
Just saying it is tuning that will make the biggest difference for overrun. Boost does not come into play in that scenario. Maybe somebody offers a tune for the 128 that increases it?

BMW is just doing what Porsche is now doing on all their performance cars. Retarding the ignition to create "character" in the form of burbles and such. Personally I find it a bit fake.

Yes you very audibly heard the pops and bangs in cabin... You actually could feel them sort of fart out of the exhaust system too, oddly enough.

I just had my resonator welded back on. SO. MUCH. BETTER. Catless headers really add a beautiful note to the n52 but it also introduces a ton of rasp and volume(welcomed IMO). Keeping the resonator in place while doing catless headers results in a burbly overrun/off throttle pops, without them being too loud. An added benefit is the car is much quieter and has a smoother note. It's subtle enough that you can hooligan around without making the entire town know, but also loud enough that you can hear it.

I'll grab some clips in the coming week of both in cabin as well as exterior and fly by's.

I agree with Mightymousetech, I actually like it, I actually first heard it from the Jaguar F-type, then I heard some f30 335I with it and BAM, couldnt resist!

The only time I get rasp is if I'm driving hard, then park it for 15 minutes, then get back in and drive. During the first minute of re-warmup driving, I get rasp.

I meant catless headers without the resonator= tons of rasp. I now agree with you when you said that headers alone are enough to make our cars sound great.

The stock exhaust system(plus 135i muffler in my case)+ catless headers= beautiful beautiful noises.

Ah, same exact page then.

We definitely need to meet up when I'm in Long Island for that wedding later this year.

Ugh, couldn't agree more. Take the new huracan and a45 for example, one ruining a nice clean sounding V10 with completely fake pops/bangs and one trying to hide the ugly 4banger noises with forced crackles and burbles

I have the BMW Performance exhaust and I get some really nice notes and the "back pressure" sound that you are talking about. It doesn't do much in terms of performance, but the sound is definitely nice and it's fairly easy to install if you have a way to cut the old muffler off. I have seen a couple being sold lately in the for sale section.
