Question on how long can you keep a ED car in Europe.
I have a question and I really could appreciate it if someone can help me. Let's say I purchase a car through European Delivery and i want to keep it longer than the alloted 14 days with insurance. I read in the ED handbook that cars kept over 6 months in Europe, become the buyer's responsibility to send it back on their own expense. Then it says cars left in Europe over 12 months, are charged a 16% VAT Tax. Does that mean that the car can now be registered in Europe, or is that just a penalty?

No one seems to know about this stuff on the list. I have asked about the cost of insurance past the free 2 weeks, and what countries are covered without response. I think these are Qs for the customer assistance email box at BMW. Unless E90Fleet knows the sales stuff on top of all the engineering...

Go to BMWUSA.com and in the European Deliv. section there is an insurance premium schedule.
http://www.bmwusa.com/NR/rdonlyres/5...ance_sched.pdf "You may keep your car in Europe up to 6 months after delivery (there is a 16% penalty tax if your car is not exported within the 6-month period). Cars leased through BMW Financial Services must be exported within 30 days, and cars financed through BMW Financial Services must be exported within 90 days. Excellent. Thanks Marcus330i. That was added since I last checked out the euro delivery site -- maybe because of comments I sent to the customer relations folks. Or maybe I am just blind and/or stupid. They used to have a restriction regarding travel to 'eastern block' countries that were not part of the Euro union, but I do not see any info on that. And we still do not know if EDs can be registered in Euro land after paying the 16% VAT. Not sure what the reason for doing so would be -- Why are you thinking about this, I miss my 325xi?
Pretty cool that insurance on a M3 is the same as a 325, and only $337/mo for ripping on the autobahns... |

What I actually intended to do was keep the car in Europe for about a year or so, instead of having to export it back to the states so soon. Hmm, tricky...tricky. It seems as if this part of ED is like a mystery.
