Dyno Runs - Intake Comparison (Updated with Dyno Graphs)
First I want to thank Rob at COBB for working with me on comparing a lot of different combo's yesterday on my car. We tried different stage 1 maps with different intake combinations to see what works and what doesn't as well as some other benchmarks as far as the new exhaust i installed (next post will show those results). To summarize there is definitely some power to be had somewhere by modifying how the stock intake directs air to the stock air filter. I haven't tested AFE or any other intake systems yet but here are the combinations we went through. #1 COBB Stage 1 v202 STD, BMS DCI, Berk Technology Sport Muffler, Berk Technology Resonated Midpipes #2 COBB Stage 1 v202 STD, Stock Airbox w/Brand new Filter right out of the box from BMW, Berk Technology Sport Muffler, Berk Technology Resonated Midpipes #3 COBB Stage 1 v202 STD, Stock Airbox w/Brand new Filter right out of the box from BMW, AIRBOX COVER REMOVED, Berk Technology Sport Muffler, Berk Technology Resonated Midpipes I will try to get the dyno graphs up here but basically #1 made an average of 5hp less across the board than #2 and #2 made an average 5 hp across the entire rpm range less than #3. So we've confirmed the DCI's are more restrictive than the stock airbox. We've also confirmed that the stock "ram air" piping that feeds the stock airbox is causing a restriction on the dyno. In the real world driving scenario things might be different but for comparisons sake on the dyno this is what we found. At the end of the day, one of my favorite corporate BS quotes , i will be leaving the stock airbox on until i find the need for 5 more hp and can justify paying money for it... however exhaust on a 135 is a totally different story.See Exhaust Dyno Results below http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=539432

I'd love to see a hood closed dyno result as well. Those dcis would probably loose 30hp instead of just 5-10...

There is no way a dci loses that kind of hp..
Even if it does it is important to point out that it is at moderate boost levels so at 18psi a stock box does not flow enough.

dci's have a ton of heat soak...so yeah they can lose that much hp...they don't insulate at all.

The stock box heat soaks too and either way I rather have sufficent hoter air going into the manifold than a lack of slightly cooler air.
Just my thoughts...

Dyno was done with the hood closed on all runs except with the airbox top off where we tried to see how much power we could put down with as little restriction as possible
For sure things could be different off the dyno but it was done to determine which is best for my setup as it sits today. When I go stage 2 I'll try to do it again at higher boost but my hypothesis would be that if it's a restriction at 14-16.5psi it will probably be worse at 18, just my opinion.

You definitely cant feel 5 whp on the butt dyno, and in real world applications it's nothing. I'll stick to my dci for the sound alone. The dci's flow better, no question, granted they pull in hot air. Get a better FMIC and if you're still worried about heat soak then run meth.

I honestly have not. Some of the cold air intakes look more promising

These dyno comparisons are awesome, keep them up as much as you can! These results sort of confirm to me what I've always thought to be true. Although there may be some benefit to running DCIs, the amount of contradictory evidence makes it seem pointless.

Now that we're getting close to 100 degree temps in TX, I also feel the heat soak occurring with the DCI. Put the stock intake on and had better throttle response. I also have the Cobb (which is amazing btw).

SO what we need is an airbox that has lower intake temps and remains "closed"........AFE Stage 2 ??? I have fitted one of these now and done a review...do a search and take a look

I've seen many tests done and the DCI always outperforms the stock airbox with the hood down. A DCI is functionally identical to having the lid off the top of the airbox. There is a flaw in your testing.
The way you do the testing is to do 3 runs with one setup separated by say 1 minute each and then three runs with the next setup separated by say 1 minute each and take the lowest of each group. You also need to add boost and timing advance to the charts for a full analysis. Boost must be identical in the runs being compared otherwise you are comparing apples to oranges. With a piggyback like the JB4 that is easy as boost targets are fixed. With a flash tune it's much harder as boost floats around on you from run to run. Mike |
