Dynavin for 1 series
so i was looking into replacing my bmw business radio, but after finding out that if i put ina aftermarket din size radio, i would need to keep the oem one for "gong" sound i started thinking alternatively. after looking well at some pictures of the 3 series, i figured 1 and 3 series share the same radio. so i did a search on 3 series after marked radios and came across a company called Dynavin.
http://www.dynavin.com/products/product_dnv_e9x.php where i found this. so i email them and asked if it would fit the 1 series. but they said i would have to cut in some of the plastic behind the facial plate to make it fit, but then again they said they were going to release a model for the E8x in around august 2011. they also said that they would look into keeping the "gong" sound when i asked about that. i know many of these chineese companys make head units like this for audis,vw and such that interface with the canbus system. so i gues this unit does the same and therefor keeps gong sound and so on. so im getting one in august also in additon i just bought a soundstream STL4.320 and i was thinking what kind of 4" components to add to it. i was thinking of the Morel dotech set, but it says they need 100w rms. and the soundstream gives 50w rms, i know u should take the power rating on a speaker with "a pinch of salt" but still it might be a bit underpower, any suggestions? |

Can't wait for these guys to release one for 1 series. I've got my wife a 128i without a navi and she's being a bit cranky about it. Since I have an I-drive in my 135 . So I've been looking for something good looking and stock looking .... Will definitely get one when it comes out

I believe the main reason why you need to keep the OE headunit installed is because the dealer can not update your cars SW without the radio installed!! At least that is my undertanding.

Nobody has tried this yet, huh?
$749 at bimmerautoparts. Seems like a pretty inexpensive solution. Although it doesn't say anything about satellite radio, and 800x480 resolution isn't so hot. Still... ? Wish someone would do the work for me and review it. |

I dont have it, I just pulled the video from youtube. I know that there is a truthworthly vendor (check e46 forum) and you will see the vendor. I have NO IDEA how the SW is and I am concerned with losing certain things like future updates to SW.
BTW, you could retrofit iDrive for $2500 plus installation from another vendor... thinking about doing that also |

Yo Rogm.. Bimmer retrofit? i believe is their name. Google them. Its pricey though and if you are like me and DO NOT have iDrive then you need a new dash and other wires. I dont know if I am willing to pay upward to 3k for it with labor with no guarantee that it will work. Bimmer Retrofit is located in CANADA...
I might have to go the Dynavin route |

I commute about 800 miles per week so I am seriously debating a nice single din head unit... no one rides in my car anyways, plus its easy to re-install the factory unit if i need a sw update. |

Huh. Seems like a cool option, too.
Wonder how well it works. $600 and includes Nav? To be honest, these cheap systems do worry me a little. I am a firm believer in "you get what you pay for," yet I'm always on the lookout for a bargain. Also, of course, these couple of units we're looking at here completely replace the radio and, therefore, you have to also be concerned if the sound quality will at least equal the stock system.
