My n55 135i 6mt problems...=(

Well guys...I have issues with this car. Mind you I have a touch of ocd, my borther will tell you he has a 1m orange his name is (jjschmooze). My family has owned 11 BMW's. Also compared to the average person I will say I know about cars, my father was a mechanic and showed me the way. This is my first turbo car. Im used to N/A and to be honest, I think it's better less to worry about. Well I hit 19k from July 2010, to July 1st 2011. Haha I know I just loved driving it. In this year I got, Berk 4 inch downpipe. Berk full sport exhaust. Injen full intake. Cdv mod. Afe scoops. BMS stage 1 with can-tool. Hey compared to most guys on here that are at stage 3's and etc. I figured I shouldn't have problems. Bmw claims free oil changes up to 50k and some other crap. Yep sure every 15k oil changes for a high performance car....with a turbo. I dont think so I believe your begging for problems around 50k if you go that route. I know I know right around the time it wouldnt be free anymore haha lol. Well I did other cosmetics here and there also, but powertrain wise I mentioned everything. Around last month, clutch engagement felt fine STILL DOES. I noticed going into second gear it would grind then go in, now I never ever made these mistake in my other two cars that were also manual. Im a very good manual driver I learned from my father whos been driving manual for 40 years, my mother has for 30 years. At first I was thinking "Eric" whats wrong with you are doing something wrong. But for a whole year Ive been driving it the same way so...why now. It started happening more and more to the point where Ive been driving 1st to third since......for weeks now. Just yesterday I had sal at autocouture take my tune off and downpipe. Ken at Bmw paul miller knows me and my family and knows our loyalty towards BMW I feel hurt man....I pay out of my pocket every other oil change at approx. 6k. It gets done with the BMW oil at BMW. I also get it washed waxed 3 times a week either by me or hands car wash. I knew this was becoming an issue once I was shifting 1st to third. A day later my A/C stopped working....and it hasn't worked since. WTF is that now. Then my car went nut one morning was idleing weird. I popped the hood and the clamps to intake came loose. I tightened it back up. I ordered t bolt clamps which are stronger. Alsooooooo now my car idles rough like when its just sitting you hear it making a clanging sound under the hood like a valve tap....then when you get on the gas it goes away. My boost gauge doesnt show me in vaccum just to let you know. Sal said 2nd gear syncros are done. He also said that my 6mt is not as strong as the 1m's my clutch isnt as strong and flywheel is lighter. I cant believe this...so he also deleted all the codes on my car now Im dropping it off over night keep you posted. My service advisor said I needed a new transmission so we will see what happenes.

I did get carbon fiber mirror caps, and carbon splitters nobody has I got the splitters custom made I'll post pics asap.

1M has the SAME manual trans as a N55 6MT has. Go to RealOEM.com to confirm that.

The 1M has a different flywheel (lighter) and center drive shaft and rear acles are all different though.

IF you are going to BEAT on your car and mod it away... you better be prepared to PAY for the repairs COD.

And... PLEASE use paragraphs next time. Your post was kind of painfull to read thru.

First of all. Im not beating on my car, I drive my car no different then any other guy drives their 135i with a 6mt. You dont buy a 50k car with 300 horse and 300 tq to drive the car like your grandmother would do you ? Kind of defeats the purpose of paying for the car completely. Yes Im a spirited driver shoot me. Also I didn't ask for english lessons. Deal with it ! Or don't respond at all because, your post didn't help matters. Just made me face palm...my friend take it somewhere else.Im not the only guy on here modding their car. Most are modding their cars to stage 3's etc's without supporting mods. So save it chooch. These are very minor mods I have done easy killer.

Different flywheel lighter equals better in my book my friend. I also know for a fact from paul miller BMW the SYNCRO'S are stronger! Hence the 1m like most said on here is a glorified 135i no the car is just dialed in it's just better..ALL AROUND.

I wasn't trying to embarrass you in a public forum. Just trying to point some obivous facts.

The 6MT in the 135i uses the very same trans as the 1M. period. Yes, BMW has said the 1M trans has a dry sump oiling system and special low friction syncros... but... when you go look up the part numbers for the complete trans (since that is the only way BMW sells it!), you will see the 1M trans is the same part as the N55 6MT unit.

I wish you luck on your service appointment.

You keep....saying how it's the same part numbers. But then you say yes it has a dry sump oil system, also stronger syncro's oo by the way a lighter flywheel and they are the same it what kind of way man.....your naming off very important details which in turn make it much stronger and better for spirited driving. What I'm trying to say is straight run my brother's 1m yes it's quicker then a stock 135i 6mt but not night and day. So what I think is transmission wise they should have done whatever multiple changes they made to the 1m also to the 135i. Since the overall power is very comparable. . Just my input.

^^No. I never said that. Please read what I wrote.

BMW has bent the truth here. BMW said... the 1M has a stronger trans, with special low friction coatings on the syncros and all. AND they said it has a dry sump oiling system.

As it turns out it does have low friction syncros and stronger than a N54 trans, but it does not have a dry sump oil sytem. AND that same 1M trans is also used in the normal 135i N55. BMW just forgot to tell anyone about that last fact.

What I am saying is... The 1M has the VERY SAME TRANS as a lowly 135i N55 (2011 and 2012's M.Y.) has. Period.

The 2008 thru 2010, 135i N54 uses a different manual trans(probably not as strong as the 1M/135iN55 unit(?). Again, the 1M uses the same trans as a 6MT 135i with the N55.

Just to start off, I drive a n54 transmission but I'll post it here since it is a general MT question.

What is the reason for a particular gear to go? I do noticed sometimes that when I go into 3rd, it seems to grind ever so slightly (not every time) but I always thought maybe I did not clutch in properly. And this problem is noticed shifting up from 2nd. I never have this slight grind in any other gear btw.

When I am cruising in 6th, I would sometimes drop to 3rd (and properly rev-matched) if I want to get going in a hurry. Would this cause the problem that I have in 3rd? I thought BMW tranny are reasonably robust in that regard.

Is my 3rd going? If it is, would the dealer cover it as in the OP's case?

Thanks

yea... sounds like you have worn out your 3rd gear syncro. Should be covered under the powertrain warranty. BMW would replace the entire trans since they do not rebuild transmisions any more. But if its not... I would first try a product like BG's Syncroshift trans oil. It can work wonders on marginally worn syncro rings.

Thanks Dackel. Why would BMW replace the whole trans when they can try a temporary fix like that? I guess it depends on the degree of wear.

There are no longer mechanics that work on BMW's.

Today we have parts replacers. BMW does not allow internal repairs, so your car would get a "fresh one". I do not think a dealer should try changing the trans fluid. AND if they did... they surely would not use a non approved trans oil like BG Product's SyncroShift oil.

I guess they give you a re-manufactured one, right? I guess my down shifting technique is not as good as I think I am, or not good enough as what BMW expected!

YuP! You get a re-manufactured one. Should be good or better then new.

Q). Do you rest your hand on the shifter while driving? This can also put wear on teh sycros. Doing so is a No, No!

No, I don't rest my hand on the shifter. I guess the 6-> 3 or coming down from 5 ->3 in local traffic is probably too much for my tranny. I just like it in 3rd to pull away from traffic. Down to 2nd in local traffic is just a bit too much jump in rev for me. Not enough pull if 4th.

Thanks.
